BREAKING: Following a recent announcement by BSkyB and the EFL, the decision to televise all mid-week EFL games through Sky's Red Button has been scrapped for all commercial customers from next season, effective November 29th 2018.
The decision comes on the back of relatively poor uptake from consumers but also coupled with the news of the EFL signing a controversial new 5-year partnership with Sky worth in the region of £119 million a season.
What does this mean for pubs?
This means the only EFL football that can be shown in commercial premises will be the pre-selected matches that will be shown on Sky Sports' "Football" or "Main Event" channels.
Unfortunately, this is a disappoiting bit of news for the pub industry as it is the second instance this season that sees commercial subscribers being limited in their offering compared to personal subscribers. The start of this season, Eleven Sports didn't have (and still haven't) provided a commercial solution to show La Liga and Serie A football in pubs.
What can pubs do?
In the ongoing battle against the sofa, pubs should continue to champion their unbeatable atmosphere and ability to be a central hub for sociable occasions. Trying to drive actions such as securing big bookings and setting up your venue to offer the best atmopshere possible should be a priority now, more than ever.
