With the growing stature of the domestic season, football fans can sometimes see international football as an annoying distraction from the glitz of the Premier League and Champions League. For that very reason, we’ve identified 5 key non-England games for fans of each of the big clubs in England and given suggestions of how you should market the biggest fixture of the 5, to get your punters as excited as they would be for a club game.
In this edition it's the blue half of Merseyside - Everton:
Poland vs Senegal - 4pm, Tuesday 19th June
With 2 Everton lads in contention of making the Senegal squad, Everton fans will want to see how they get on in the hardest group to call. Gueye and Niasse will be hoping that Senegal can start strongly against a strong Poland side and Everton fans will have a keen eye on Gueye in particular.
Argentina vs Croatia - 7pm, Thursday 21st June
A really tasty tie regardless of what team you support, but this will peak the interests of Everton fans if their man Funes Mori breaks into the team. With the draw of seeing Messi vs Modric combined with the game being on a Thursday night, you'll want to shout about the fact that you're showing this one. There's even potential for an all Everton battle if their Croatian attacker Nikola Vlasic makes the squad.
Senegal vs Colombia - 3pm, Thursday 28th June
Final game of the group for Senegal could prove to be decisive against the wiley South Americans. With this game taking place a few hours before England's massive game versus Belgium, there's a huge opportunity to increase your sales for the day if you entice people in early enough to watch this one. This is definitely the type of game you want to use drinks/food promotions for as it'll pay off through the increased sales on the day.
Iceland vs Croatia - 7pm, Tuesday 26th June
Everton's big money signing Gylfi Sigurdsson will be leading everyone's favourite underdogs Iceland through the tournament again this summer. After struggling with injury in his first Everton season, Everton fans will be dying to see their man in action in Russia and the final group game against Croatia could see Iceland pull off another amazing underdog story.
KEY FIXTURE - Argentina vs Iceland - 2pm, Saturday 16th June
The first real opportunity for a giant killing in this year's tournament. The second match of a 4 game match-day. Sigurdsson and Messi. You'd be mad not to be promoting this one if you've got a healthy following of Everton fans in your pub. Look to create some sort of game in the pub that requires people to stay for all 4 games on the Saturday and you're on to a winner. Something like guess all 4 results and you can get a free £50 bar tab for a game of your choice. If you get enough people entering and drinking at your pub from 11am - 11pm, then £50 is a drop in the ocean.
Check in next week where newly crowned champions Manchester City will get the same treatment.
