With the growing stature of the domestic season, football fans can sometimes see international football as an annoying distraction from the glitz of the Premier League and Champions League. For that very reason, we’ve identified 5 key non-England games for fans of each of the big clubs in England and given suggestions of how you should market the biggest fixture of the 5, to get your punters as excited as they would be for a club game.
In this edition it's Jurgen Klopp's lads, the 2nd most popular team in the UK – Liverpool:
Russia vs Egypt - 7pm, Tuesday 19th June
Liverpool fans adore Mo Salah. If you've got a ton of reds that frequent your pub, don't be surprised to see more of them supporting Egypt than England this summer. Salah's men face hosts Russia in their second game of the tournament and this is likely to be a crunch game in deciding who qualifies alongside Uruguay in Group A.
Brazil vs Switzerland - 7pm, Sunday 17th June
It's always a pleasure to watch the Brazilians play the beautiful game, but it'll be especially enticing for fans of Liverpool due to their main striker Roberto Firmino likely to feature. It also gives them an opportunity to check in on the man they haven't missed at all this season, Philippe Coutinho. In what looks to be a pretty straightforward group for the Brazilians, this may prove to be their toughest test and should be a cracking game.
Japan vs Senegal - 4pm, Sunday 24th June
The final member of the magical trio for The Reds is representing Senegal this summer. Senegal are sitting in a pretty hard to call group, so this second match could prove to be pivotal either way. Mane is by far and away the main man for Senegal and 4pm on a Sunday is a familiar time for Liverpool fans to be in the pub watching football, so make sure you've got this one on to keep them in for an extra couple of hours.
Argentina vs Croatia - 7pm, Thursday 21st June
Liverpool hard man Dejan Lovren may be in for a tough test against Messi, Aguero and co. But you can bet that fans of Liverpool will watch with a keen eye to see how the big man deals with the best of the best, in what will likely be the game that decides who tops Group D. Definitely the type of fixture you should be advertising as a post work event aided by a food offer or even a drinks offer if Lovren and his boys keep a clean sheet.
KEY FIXTURE - Egypt vs Uruguay - 1pm, Friday 15th June
This is the big one. The second game of the whole tournament sees two of the biggest stars face off against each other. It's Liverpool legend of the past, Luis Suarez versus Liverpool legend of the present, Mo Salah. The prospect of just seeing these two put on an attacking masterclass should be enough to get any Liverpool fan excited, but the fact it's day 2 of the tournament and a pretty crucial game in group A - you should be looking to get your regular Liverpool fans excited for this one already. A cracking way to get people interested for a game like this is to host a sweepstake on who'll score first; Suarez or Salah. Sell raffle tickets for either player and then give the cash to a random winner.
